Pop Art was originally conceived for the SemiPermanent 09 After Party. We were drawn to the idea of making popcorn with several domestic poppers for the contrasting qualities of popped corn accumulating in the context of a laneway bar. The project was then expanded for the PICA Carboot Sale into a 4-hour performance/installation. Here the performative action was further accentuated through the more constructed set-up of the installation, the use of face paint, and performative action. The white circle around the mouth leading down the throat emphasised the mouth as a tool for communicating and participating, while white hands and arms highlighted the action of making the popcorn as well as catching it. Here, rather than the emphasis being on the accumulation of popcorn it was also about how the participants chose to interact. Very much situated in a public setting, the work provoked active and playful interaction from a broad range of people.
